2002 JUNIOR PROVINCIALS

The Newmarket Minor Ball Hockey League played host to a record twelve under-18 teams all vying for the 2002 OBHA Junior Provincial Championship. Preliminary round action determined the AA and A Divisions of play entering the medal competition. Oshawa, Chatham, Downsview and the hometown team from Newmarket advanced to the final four in the AA group, barely slipping by Mississauga with a slightly better goal percentage.

There was seemingly nothing that was going to stop this collection of ‘orange ball’ athletes from Oshawa as they were the last team standing when the final buzzer sounded at the end of the tournament. Although they posted a perfect 5-0-0 record in the round-robin, they had to grind out identical 2-1 victories over Newmarket and Chatham in the semi-final and tournament final respectively to claim the gold medal. This was Oshawa Minor second Junior ‘AA’ Provincial Championship in the history of the OBHA event.

In the A Division Championship, Mississauga, who barely missed the AA group of play by mere percentage points, proved to be too much for the rest of their competition. The western region representatives blanked both of their northern area opponents, defeating Maple 6-0 and Penetang 3-0 in the final to capture the consolation side of the event.

Congratulations to all of the administrators, officials, coaches, players and fans that participated in the tournament and helped to make the event a resounding success.
