It was no doubt nothing less than a resounding experience
for their opposition as the Toronto
Shock stepped onto the floor in their
quest for the women’s premier ‘orange ball’prize
in Ontario. The ladies from the Big Smoke created more
than slight electrical impulse as they were a perfect
5-0-0 while scoring 21 goals and not allowing a single
goal against as they cruised to the 2002 Women’s
A Provincial Championship in London, Ontario.
In semi-final action, it was the Shock 8 and London
0, while the Vanier Phantoms defeated their league rival
Spitfires by a score of 3-2. In the tournament final,
it was all Shock as they posted a 3-0 victory over the
Phantoms for the Women’s A title.
All star Tara McKay was named the tournament’s
MVP, while teammates Connie Hamers, Kim Shapcott, and
Jordana Lee were also selected to the all star team.
Annie Gauthier and Stephanie Bigras outstanding play
for the Phantoms were also recognized as all stars in
the event.
There
was very little seperating the top four teams, three
from the Toronto area, in this year’s Women’s
B Provincial Championships in London, Ontario. Nonetheless,
despite their records in the preliminary round games,
a battle between the top two seeds seemed inevitable.
The Devils
and the Roadrunners
had identical 4-1-0 records, although, the ‘desert
birds’ had scored a wopping 19 goals going into
the final, including a resounding 5-0 semi-final victory
over the wildcard Crystal Springs team out of Trenton.
The Devils, on the other hand, sneaked by their other
league rivals the Blue Notes by a slim 3-2 margin in
final four action to advance to the championship matinee.
The Devils, led by tournament MVP Karen Nesdoly along
with all stars Kathy Philips and Dana Duval, prevailed
in an exciting championship final to upset the Roadrunners
by a score of 1-0 to claim the Women’s B Provincial
prize. It was the Devils third provincial title in the
past four years.
Michelle Rosenburg, Erin Laporte and Michelle Long were
chosen as tournament all stars for their outstanding
play for the Roadrunners who received the silver medals.
Congratulations to all the women’s program for
their continued growth and development in both the A
and B divisions of play and for their participation
in the 2002 tournament in London.
