Established in 1989, the Eastern Canada (NF, NS, NB, PEI, QC, ON) Regional Championships are contested by teams who participate in levels below the elite level ('A') in their provinces. Teams are designated into 'B' and 'C' skill levels based on competitive provincial designation. Last weekend the OBHA punched the last qualifying teams ticket to the dance Eastern C Regional.

This division of play features a blend of young up and coming teams, and older ones who still enjoy playing competitive ball hockey, but at a less challenging level. Nonetheless, it has enhanced an entirely new venue for participation among provincial representatives. For many players, it is their first taste of an out-of-province tournament that provides them the opportunity to travel to different parts of the country and to meet new people while playing a game that they continue to enjoy.

Canadian Jokers Are Going Back to the Dance

The tournament has annually provided very entertaining championships and a great time for all who have attended. The 2008 event was no exception. The Canadian Jokers of the Northwest Toronto Ball Hockey League, claimed gold, defeating the Portugese Bandits in the tournament final. They now join the 2007 Provincial Champions qualified teams, Bet Who Eagles (Men’s C) and the Metro Devils (Master’s) later this summer in Halifax.

The Jokers were led by the solid goaltending tandem of Chris Custodio and Pat Ventullo who shared the ball stopping duties.

Congratulations to all of the competing teams and their players for their formidable representation at the event. Next stop: Halifax, Nova Scotia
