There was plenty of BLING and the ROYALS were out, but this wasn’t the wedding. This was of course the Women’s Pre Season Tournament and just another great weekend for the sport as fourteen teams competed for the championship at the ‘A’ and ‘B’ level of competition in Mississauga.

If this was the preview for the Provincial Championships later this year, we will indeed be in for a treat as the level of competition was simply wonderful. At this year’s tourney, there was very little separating all the teams as this was the most balanced tournament in years and it was any team’s tournament to win.

In the Women’s ‘A’ class, Toronto Women’s Ball Hockey League showed they have the two best club teams in the province as the Royals out lasted the Shamrocks en route to the 2-1 victory in overtime. The Royals were lead up front by Lotoya Clarke and Kelly Zamora who seemed to dominate every shift and had Britni Smith on defence and Katie Passfield in goal.

In semi-final action and in what many in attendance felt was the best game of the weekend, the Royals would battle the Ottawa Lightening and win the see-saw affair 5-4 in a shoot out, while the Shamrocks would defeat a strong Team USA 4-2. The USA team used the event as tune up for this year’s World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

In Women’s B division, the excitement of the round robin would continue to the quarter final round with the Dirty Misfits winning over the Buzz from Brampton 3-0. In the other quarter final game, the Battalion upended the Has Been’s from Toronto 2-1.

In semi final action, Bling battled the feisty Battalion led by the goaltending of Danielle Bailey to a 2-1 victory in overtime and the Peterborough Allstars, again in overtime would outlast the Dirty Misfits in a 1-0 win. The final would see the Bling after numerous years capture their Pre Season Championship with a 4-2 victory. The Peterborough squad will represent Ontario at the Eastern Regionals and we wish that group of players the best in Charlottetown, P.E.I. from July 21-24

And to the victors go the spoils! The presentation of the championship trophy, championship and all star awards, have become synonymous with OBHA supremacy. It is an accomplishment and one of the most sought after collection of trinkets in sports today.
